The higher bill follows a record month. In an Oct. 1 statement, AAA reported that Texas drivers paid more for regular gasoline in September than in any earlier September. The old record for the month had stood since 2012. The motor club did not call September the costliest month ever. It said the statewide daily average record, set in June 2022, still stands.
AAA tied September's prices to costlier crude oil and to uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz, half a world away. Federal figures show the same pull. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that Brent crude, a global benchmark, averaged far above its August level in September. The agency estimated that world oil stocks shrank during the third quarter. It expects them to keep shrinking through the end of the year.
Some relief has reached the pump. In the same Oct. 1 statement, AAA said crude had slipped back to the $90-a-barrel range, which could ease gasoline costs. A week later, AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster said prices were dropping across most of Texas and the country, according to the motor club. The statewide average had fallen several cents in seven days.
EIA's October forecast expects gasoline prices to stay about level from September into October, then decline slowly as crude prices fall. The agency projects that the national average for all of 2026 will finish well above the 2025 average. It puts the 2027 average below this year's but still above 2025. Those figures are forecasts, not prices drivers have paid.
EIA's weekly survey for Oct. 5 found the national price for regular gasoline lower than a week earlier but more than a dollar higher than a year earlier. Prices in the agency's Gulf Coast region ran below the national average.
