Benbrook pulls away from Gainesville, 63-25

Benbrook scored 63 points at Gainesville on Friday night, and the Leopards will open homecoming week still looking for their first win of the season. The Bobcats took the Sept. 4 varsity game 63-25, according to the game record kept by MaxPreps, which UIL says is its partner for collecting scores and updating the state scoreboard. Gainesville sits at 0-2 and hosts Bowie at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Leopard Stadium.

One Benbrook player accounted for much of it. Dorien Johnson reached the end zone five times, three times on catches and twice on punt returns, the box score shows. Quarterback Lucas Davis completed 16 of 26 passes for about 220 yards and three touchdowns.

The public record stops there. The game page carries no quarter-by-quarter scoring, and the Leopards' team page said individual player statistics had not been entered, so how Gainesville's 25 points were scored cannot be confirmed from it.

Gainesville opened the season Aug. 28 with a 38-0 loss to Bridgeport. Benbrook is 2-0 after beating Trimble Tech 42-34 in its opener.

Friday's result carries no weight in either team's district race. UIL's 2026-28 alignment lists both schools in Class 4A and puts their enrollments 11 students apart, 885 at Gainesville and 874 at Benbrook, but the two play in separate districts and separate divisions. Gainesville's Division II District 6 slate includes Krum, Lake Worth, Ponder and Sanger. Districts certify their playoff qualifiers Nov. 7, and UIL gives schools 11 weeks to play a maximum of 10 games.

Gainesville High School's home page lists the Bowie game as homecoming, with the crowning at halftime and a parade through downtown Sept. 9. Bowie comes to town unbeaten, having won 40-0 over Callisburg and 54-6 over Bridgeport, MaxPreps records show. Benbrook plays at Castleberry the same night, according to its athletics site.

Among nearby teams Friday, Muenster beat Holliday 54-21 and Lindsay lost to Alvord 42-19 to fall to 0-2. UIL lists both as 2A programs, at enrollments of 180 and 145.

The National Weather Service office in Fort Worth issued a heat advisory Saturday afternoon for Cooke County and named Gainesville among the cities covered, in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, with heat index readings as high as 108 expected. The office says it begins heat-alert procedures when the index is forecast to reach 105 two days running with the night between staying at 78 or warmer. CDC guidance for athletes says people who exercise in heat dehydrate faster and face a higher risk of heat illness, and it advises shifting workouts away from midday and drinking more water than usual. DFW reached 109 degrees on Aug. 24, its high for the summer, after hitting 100 for the first time this year on July 7.
