Ike's History Fest returns to the Eisenhower Birthplace at $3 admission

Admission is $3 at Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site in Denison, where Ike's History Fest runs through 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The Texas Historical Commission lists the event for Sept. 4 and 5 at 609 S. Lamar Ave., 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, and says the $3 admission includes a Birthplace tour as availability allows.

The commission describes the program as two days of hands-on history, with historic and nature-based organizations traveling to Denison to meet the public. Its 2026 listing names the National Museum of the Pacific War, Fort McKavett, San Jacinto Battleground, the Star of the Republic Museum, Goodnight Ranch, the Sam Rayburn House, the Sam Bell Maxey House, Grayson County Frontier Village and Eisenhower State Park. Bluestem Master Naturalists and the Denison Library were listed for Friday alone. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge was listed for Saturday.

That price sits below most of the paid tour categories the Birthplace charges the rest of the year. A regular adult tour costs twice the festival rate and a family ticket four times it, according to THC's visitor page, which lists lower prices for seniors, veterans, teachers and youth. The site's $1 school and homeschool programs come in under the festival rate, and children 5 and under are admitted free year-round. Grayson County Frontier Village, another living-history stop in the area, charged $8 a person for its spring program days.

THC's public event records show Ike's History Festival listings in 2024, 2025 and 2026. The 2024 edition opened to the general public on Sept. 7, following a homeschool day and a seventh-grade day earlier that week, according to a commission bulletin. The 2025 festival ran Sept. 5 and 6 at the same $3 admission, with a Birthplace tour as space allowed.

Eisenhower, the 34th president, was born in the Denison house on Oct. 14, 1890, THC's site history says. The community bought the home in 1946. It became a state park in 1958, and the rooms were refurnished in 1890s style in 2003.

A family driving east from Cooke County finds the Birthplace inside a tight cluster of stops. THC's visitor page puts the Red River Railroad Museum less than half a mile away, with Loy Lake Park and Frontier Village, Eisenhower State Park, the Sherman Museum and the Hagerman refuge all within about 16 miles. Travel Texas counted roughly 111 million day trips in Texas in 2024, most of them taken by Texans, and reported that 80 percent of in-state visitors traveled by car.

State money is headed for the property. THC's appropriations request for fiscal 2026-27 identifies about $3.4 million in one-time general revenue from Senate Bill 30 for an Eisenhower Birthplace visitor center, and tells lawmakers the current visitor center occupies a small two-bedroom house with limited space. The site is open to the general public five days a week, the request says. The commission's capital budget puts estimated completion at Aug. 31, 2028.
