Leopards Open Aug. 28 With an Interim Coach and a Redrawn District

The Gainesville Leopards open the 2026 football season Aug. 28 on the road at Bridgeport, playing for an interim head coach and inside a district the state redrew this year. Gainesville ISD has named L.J. Searcy interim head football coach for the 2026-27 school year, according to the district's news page, and KXII carried a preview of the season in a staff-written story and a companion video page, both titled "Gainesville Leopards Preview" and stamped Aug. 22 at 10:50 p.m.

What changed most for local fans is the list of teams on the other sideline. The University Interscholastic League's 2026-28 alignment puts Gainesville in Conference 4A Division II, District 6, alongside Krum, Sanger and Van Alstyne, all held over from the last two-year cycle, plus Lake Worth and Ponder. Bonham, Caddo Mills and Farmersville, district opponents under the 2024-26 alignment, are no longer in Gainesville's district.

Gainesville stayed in Division II by 11 students. UIL's rank-order list counted 885 students at the high school, and the league set the Division I floor at 896 for this cycle. A count on the other side of that line would have put the Leopards in Division I this fall, against the larger half of Class 4A. UIL's cutoff table lists 97 football schools in 4A Division II and 108 in Division I.

The nondistrict run starts at Bridgeport, then brings Benbrook, Bowie, Paris North Lamar and Burkburnett, according to the school's official athletics calendar. District play opens Oct. 9 against Ponder and continues at Sanger on Oct. 16, against Krum on Oct. 23 and Van Alstyne on Oct. 30, then closes at Lake Worth on Nov. 6.

Those five district games will determine playoff qualification under UIL rules. The league's football manual advances the top four teams from each district in Classes 2A through 5A, so four of the six schools in District 6 can qualify and two cannot.

The program has reached the state final five times and won once, by UIL's all-time appearances table. The championship came in 2003 against Burnet, 35-24, according to the league's champions archive, which also records Gainesville's 2005 title-game loss to Wimberley, 21-7. The three earlier trips came in 1974, 1976 and 1978.

None of the realignment is particular to Cooke County. UIL describes the 2026-28 changes as part of its regular statewide reclassification and realignment cycle, with football, basketball and volleyball alignments released first and the remaining events set for spring 2026. For Gainesville, the result is the schedule the school has posted: a Friday opener at Bridgeport and five district games against North Texas opponents.
