Reward Offered in Fatal US 82 Hit-and-Run Near Sherman

Texas DPS North Texas Region is seeking information on the driver of a Toyota Corolla that the agency said fled after a fatal crash with an eastbound motorcycle on US 82 near Sherman. North Texas Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000 for information that leads to the driver’s arrest and indictment, according to DPS.

DPS said the crash happened July 22 at about 2:51 p.m. at US 82 and Smith Oak Road in unincorporated Grayson County. The case falls within the North Texas and Texoma traffic corridor followed by many Cooke County drivers who use US 82 between Gainesville, Sherman and points east.

In its public notice, DPS said its preliminary investigation found that the Toyota Corolla driver failed to yield the right of way before the motorcycle was struck. DPS did not identify the driver in the notice.

North Texas Crime Stoppers, which DPS listed as the tip line for the case, accepts anonymous tips by phone or online. The program’s own materials describe anonymous rewards of up to $5,000.

Texas law requires drivers involved in crashes that cause injury or death, or are reasonably likely to do so, to stop at or near the scene, return if necessary, check whether anyone needs aid and stay until required information-and-aid duties are met. Texas Transportation Code Section 550.021 makes leaving the scene of a collision that results in death a second-degree felony.

Texas Penal Code Section 12.33 sets the punishment range for a second-degree felony at two to 20 years in prison and permits a fine of up to $10,000.

TxDOT says its annual crash reports are built from Crash Records Information System data submitted through Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports. In its 2025 statewide fact sheet, TxDOT reported about 3,800 traffic deaths in Texas, including more than 550 motorcyclists.

TxDOT’s 2025 contributing-factor table counted more than 150 units in fatal crashes where a left-turn failure to yield right of way was listed as a contributing factor. That statewide table is separate from the July 22 Sherman-area crash, which DPS described as a preliminary investigation.

NHTSA’s 2025 early estimate put national traffic deaths below the prior year. DPS directed anyone with information about the Toyota Corolla driver to contact North Texas Crime Stoppers anonymously at 877-373-8477 or online.
