Sherman Boys & Girls Club says growth is driving up demand for youth programs

Community growth is pushing up demand for youth programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Sherman, the club says on its website. The club places Cooke County inside its service area on its North Texas Giving Day fundraising page.

The club says it serves hundreds of young people each year. Its giving page lists Cooke with Collin, Fannin and Grayson counties.

The GvilleTX Newsroom checked the club's website and other primary records for a 60th-anniversary celebration. Those records did not confirm one. They also did not confirm a visit to the club by Kyle Crick.

Crick's early ties to the club are on record. An obituary for his brother, Kevin, posted by Waldo Funeral Home, says both boys spent a good deal of time playing sports at the Sherman club as they grew up. MLB's Baseball Savant record shows Kyle Crick played in the major leagues over six seasons. The record does not show whether he plays today.

The club links its rising demand to growth in the community. Census Bureau estimates put a measure on that growth. Sherman's population climbed by about a fifth between April 2020 and July 2025, to roughly 52,000 people.

The club's giving page shows where donor money would go. The club seeks safety improvements to its facility, along with emergency preparedness supplies and secure spaces. It also asks for help paying for field trips and for educational supplies used after school. The page pairs set gift amounts with uses, such as memberships for two children or summer field trips for one member.

The Afterschool Alliance's October 2025 Texas survey release found that parents wanted after-school programs for more than five times as many children as were enrolled. The release named cost as a barrier. It also pointed to limits on availability and access.

Nationally, the alliance reports that unmet demand for after-school programs has grown 60 percent since 2004.

Kyle Crick made his major-league debut on June 22, 2017, according to his MLB player page. The same page shows he elected free agency on Nov. 4, 2024.

The Crick family's tie to the club also runs through a memorial. Kevin Crick died in December 2019. His obituary asked that gifts go to the Sherman club for a new sports field to bear his name.

Baseball and the clubs share a national link as well. Boys & Girls Clubs of America says Major League Baseball named it an official charitable partner in 1997.

In nearby Denison, the Boys & Girls Club of Denison says it has served that city and surrounding counties since 1966. It runs after-school programs at its main site and at Hyde Park, Mayes, Terrell and B-Mac Intermediate.
