Sherman Chip Buildout Widens With $23.7 Million More in Coherent Work

Coherent Corp. has filed for about $24 million in new construction at its Sherman campus, according to two project records with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Sherman is in Grayson County, which sits in the same Workforce Solutions Texoma board area as Cooke County, so the work falls inside the labor market Gainesville job seekers already use.

Both filings list 6800 S. U.S. 75, the address Coherent gives for its Sherman location. The larger is a logistics building addition of about 45,900 square feet, listed to start in August and finish in late January 2027. The other, filed as Zone 1 & 2 Wafering, is a renovation for semiconductor manufacturing listed to run June 1 to Dec. 1, 2026. Neither filing addresses hiring, and the records reviewed do not show how many Cooke County residents would work on the projects or what they would pay.

The filings follow a much larger commitment at the same property. The City of Sherman said Coherent broke ground in June on a $650 million expansion to make lasers, optical components and semiconductors in a 6-inch indium phosphide fab, with wafer output expected to quadruple and 550 jobs supported at full production. Coherent's announcement that month put the figure above 1,000 jobs at completion. The Commerce Department's CHIPS Program announced a letter of intent for up to $50 million in direct funding, and the governor's office announced a grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund, created by the 2023 Texas CHIPS Act.

Public money has reached that address before. Sherman City Council minutes from 2018 record tax abatement and Chapter 380 agreements with Finisar Sherman RE Holdco covering a combined 15 years of incentives; Coherent lists that entity among its subsidiaries at the U.S. 75 site.

Coherent is one of three companies driving the buildout. GlobalWafers America is advertising Sherman openings for process engineers, industrial electricians, maintenance and AMHS technicians, and quality and procurement staff, and NIST expects about 1,200 construction jobs and 750 manufacturing jobs at that plant. Texas Instruments began production at its first Sherman fab in December and says the site could hold as many as four, with 3,000 company jobs.

NIST says the United States supplies about 12% of global chipmaking capacity and that roughly 90% of silicon wafers come from East Asia, the supply-chain argument behind the federal money.

In the near term, the Coherent filings mean construction crews on U.S. 75 into next winter. The job listings are the part Cooke County residents can act on now, and they run through the same workforce board that serves Gainesville.
