Sherman ISD Plans Stadium Open House Before Bearcats’ Home Opener

Sherman ISD says it will open the new Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex stadium for a community open house Saturday, Sept. 12, before the Bearcats play their first varsity football game there the next week. The event gives residents a scheduled look at a voter-approved facility that district records say is set to open three years earlier than the date shared before the 2023 bond election.

The open house will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with home-side gates opening at 5 p.m., according to Sherman ISD’s open house notice. The district says a ribbon cutting and student performances are planned for 6 p.m.

Sherman ISD says the Bearcats’ first varsity game in the new stadium is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 18, against The Colony High School. The district’s 2026 varsity home schedule lists four games at the stadium, with home dates on Sept. 18, Oct. 2, Oct. 16 and Nov. 6.

The district describes the stadium as a five-story, 8,000-seat multipurpose facility with a press box and live videoboard. Sherman ISD’s stadium project page says the facility is intended for football, soccer, track and field, band, cheer, Hi-Steppers, broadcast, AV, journalism CTE and other extracurricular programs.

Sherman ISD says the stadium will open in September 2026, ahead of the 2029 opening date presented to voters before the May 2023 bond election. The project is part of the district’s 2023 bond program, which Sherman ISD says totaled $540 million and was approved by voters.

Official Grayson County election results show Sherman ISD Proposition B, the multipurpose stadium proposition, passed with about 64% support. A Sherman ISD bond issuance report from March 24, 2025, listed the stadium bond authorization at about $46.8 million.

Sherman ISD says the bond projects have been funded without increasing the district tax rate, citing growth in the local property tax base from high-tech industry growth. The district’s March 2025 bond report shows certified taxable value rose about 47% in one year, while the district’s total tax rate was lower in 2024-25 than in 2022-23 and its debt-service rate stayed unchanged.

For families planning for the first football season there, Sherman ISD’s athletics ticket page lists reserved varsity football tickets at $12 in presale and $15 after noon on game day. The district’s season-ticket notice priced inaugural-season reserved seats at $48 for the four-game home schedule.

The complex name predates the stadium bond vote. Sherman ISD says its Board of Trustees named the athletic complex for Tommy Hudspeth in 2021. The district says Hudspeth worked in Sherman ISD for 25 years and led the Bearcat football team to a 25-game unbeaten run from 1975 through 1977.
