Sherman’s new stadium cleared for September games

Sherman ISD says Sherman High School’s new multipurpose stadium is ready to open in September, giving the Grayson County district an on-campus home for varsity football and other student programs as growth keeps reshaping school facilities across North Texas. The district has set a public open house for Sept. 12, with the first varsity football game scheduled Sept. 18 against The Colony High School.

The five-story stadium seats about 8,000 spectators, according to Sherman ISD. It sits at the Tommy Hudspeth Athletic Complex, where the district says the project used the high school’s existing athletic field, track, field house, concessions and related infrastructure.

For Sherman High School students, the move changes the school-day logistics around stadium events. Sherman ISD says the high school site removes the need to bus students or have them drive to Bearcat Stadium, the longtime venue that has hosted district athletic competitions since 1941.

The district describes the new stadium as a venue for more than football. Sherman ISD’s project materials list soccer, track and field, band, cheer, Hi-Steppers, broadcast/AV/journalism career and technical education, and other student activities among its planned uses.

The stadium came out of Sherman ISD’s May 2023 bond program, which totaled $540 million across its propositions. Official Grayson County election returns show voters approved the stadium proposition, and district records list the guaranteed maximum price for the stadium and site work at about $55 million.

Sherman ISD says the bond projects have been funded without raising the district’s tax rate, attributing that to high-tech industry growth that increased the property-tax base. The district also says the stadium is opening three years earlier than the 2029 date shared with voters before the bond election.

The project lands in a city that has been adding people and jobs. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Sherman’s population rose about 20% from April 2020 to July 2025, and the City of Sherman’s 2024 housing study said Texas Instruments and GlobalWafers USA were expected to add about 4,700 jobs over the next decade.

State records show school construction is part of a wider borrowing picture in Texas. The Texas Bond Review Board reported that school districts carried the largest amount of local tax-supported general-obligation debt over the past five fiscal years.

Sherman High School remains in UIL 5A for the 2026-28 cycle, according to the district, with varsity football placed in Conference 5A Division I Region 1 District 3. Sherman ISD says Bearcat Stadium will continue to host middle school and youth sports.
