Sherman shelter dogs walk the trails at Eisenhower State Park

Three adoptable dogs from the Sherman Animal Shelter spent an hour on the trails at Eisenhower State Park in Denison instead of in a kennel, according to an official post from the park and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The park named the walking crew as Buster, DudeBro and Roll and said the dogs got trail time rather than time in the run.

For readers on this side of the county line, the walk is a nearby example of how a shelter puts adoptable dogs in front of the public, at a moment when Sherman Animal Services says it is over capacity and Noah's Ark Animal Shelter in Gainesville says its building can no longer keep up.

TPWD lists Tails on the Trails on its Eisenhower calendar as an easy walk alongside a park ranger and a rescue dog from the Sherman shelter. The department's listing for the April 24, 2026, session ran from 9 to 10 a.m., met at the OHV parking lot and was free with park admission, with waivers available that morning. The park's page gives the address as 50 Park Road 20, puts adult entry at $5 with no charge for children 12 and under, and counts more than four miles of trail open to walkers and cyclists, so the dogs were out on maintained public ground.

The park's post said the outing let each dog show its personality away from the shelter environment. The Sherman shelter's own site says volunteers help by walking and bathing the animals and giving them human contact, and that staff and volunteers keep up enrichment while animals wait for homes.

What happens to a dog that waits is set out in city rules. The shelter says unclaimed strays are held three days before they can go to families or rescue groups. Its ordinance summary says the animals become city property after that hold, then are adopted or euthanized depending on the space available. Sherman Animal Services said in a July 31, 2026, post that the shelter was over capacity and was offering Clear the Shelters pricing of $25 for dogs and $20 for cats, against the regular fees the shelter lists at $50 for dogs and $40 for cats.

The same capacity pressure turns up in Cooke County records and shelter statements. Gainesville's animal-control page says Noah's Ark has care and custody of every animal impounded in the city. Noah's Ark says it was established in 2006, operates in cooperation with the city, serves Gainesville and the county, and that its small, aging building has been stretched since it opened and no longer meets the need from the hundreds of animals it handles each year, whether lost, abandoned or given up by their owners. City records counted 2,130 animal-control calls in fiscal 2024-2025, including 952 calls about animals at large. The Cooke County Sheriff's Office said in an official post that around 60 adoptable dogs had cleared stray hold.

The backlog is national. Best Friends Animal Society reported that 46 percent of dogs entering U.S. shelters were adopted in 2025, that about half a million dogs and cats are waiting in shelters on any given day, and that owner surrenders ran slightly higher at midyear 2026 than at the same point a year earlier. Shelter Animals Count reported 597,000 shelter animals euthanized in 2025.
