Whitesboro's veteran Bearcats set sights past the first round

Whitesboro opens the 2026 football season with a senior class that has been starting since sophomore year, head coach Cody Fagan told KXII in an August preview. Players told the station their goals are to win the district and get past the first round of the playoffs.

That gives the Bearcats a public benchmark beyond simply reaching the postseason. Whitesboro High School uses the Bearcats name across its athletics programs, including football, according to the school's athletics site.

Under the UIL's 2026-28 alignment, Whitesboro plays in Conference 3A Division I District 5 with Pottsboro, Gunter, Pilot Point, Dallas A+ and Dallas Life Oak Cliff.

Pottsboro brings one of the district's recent benchmarks. KXII reported the Cardinals went unbeaten in district last fall and won four playoff rounds before Grandview ended their season in December 2025. Head coach Matt Poe told the station his goals are a district championship and a game on Thanksgiving. UIL state-team records list Pottsboro at 15-0 going into the 2019-20 state championship game.

The UIL calendar sets a tight regular-season window. The association's tentative 2026 dates give schools 11 weeks to play as many as 10 games, with the regular season closing Nov. 7. Playoff rounds begin Nov. 12-14, and state championship games are set for Dec. 16-19.

UIL's cutoffs for this cycle place 3A Division I at enrollments of 367 to 549 students. UIL historical data shows the 3A range moved from 254-544 in the last alignment to 246-549 for 2026-28.

Regional programs start from different places. Bells and Howe are in 3A Division II District 7, which reaches into Cooke County through Callisburg and Valley View. KXII reported Bells missed the playoffs on tiebreakers despite a 3-3 district record, and head coach Dale West told the station the Panthers need to get back to winning close games and hope to play in December. KXII reported Howe entered the season after a 2-8 year in head coach Jake Smith's first season, and that a playoff berth would be the Bulldogs' first since 2022. Tioga, grouped in 2A Division I District 6 with Muenster and Nocona, finished 4-2 in district and lost its playoff opener to Hamilton, according to KXII; head coach Zach Birdwell told the station the program wants to be in its best form rolling into the playoffs. Van Alstyne came off a 4-6 regular season and a first-round playoff loss to Sunnyvale, KXII reported, then reached the state 7-on-7 championship game in June and lost to Graham 32-25.

The pool of players behind those Friday nights is at a record. The National Federation of State High School Associations counted 8,266,244 high school athletes nationwide in 2024-25, with about 1.1 million in some form of football.

Whitesboro's stated goals are a district title and a playoff win. UIL postseason play begins Nov. 12-14.
