Porch Lights Contest

Six awards. One per household.

$500 in prizes
  • People's ChoiceThe porch neighbors like most. Votes alone decide it.$100
  • Best ThemeOne clear idea carried all the way through: a story, a film, a time period or a character. Every piece fits.$80
  • Most CreativeThe most original idea, or the cleverest use of what you had. Handmade and DIY work counts here, like props you built or things you repurposed.$80
  • Less Is MoreThe most charm from the least. One funny sign or a simple, clever idea that lands, like googly eyes on the garage door. You don't need to buy out the store.$80
  • SpookiestThe best scare: fog, sound, light or a jump scare.$80
  • Best Treat StopThe best place to stop for a treat: easy to reach, welcoming, with a creative way to hand out treats.$80
How winners are picked.

People's Choice goes to the most votes. In the other five awards, judges give up to 70 points and votes give up to 30, and the highest total wins. Each household can win one award.

Full rules

The rules, in plain words.

Who can enter

  • Any house on the GvilleTX trick-or-treat map in Cooke County with an approved decoration photo.
  • One entry per address. Entry is free.
  • Being on the map is enough. We don't check who handed out treats.
  • The judges' households can't enter.

How to enter

  • Put your house on the trick-or-treat map.
  • Add a photo of your decorations by Thu., Oct. 29, 11:59 PM.
  • That's it. Your porch is in all six awards. You don't pick one.
  • Houses can still join the map after Oct. 29. They are not in the contest.

How voting works

  • Sign in to vote. Voting is open now until Sat., Oct. 31, 11:59 PM.
  • Pick one porch in each award. The same porch can be your pick in more than one award.
  • Change your picks as often as you like until voting closes.
  • You can't pick your own house.
  • Vote on this page, or from a house on the night map as you walk.

Prizes

  • $500 in all. People's Choice wins $100. Best Theme, Most Creative, Less Is More, Spookiest and Best Treat Stop win $80 each.
  • GvilleTX pays each prize by check to the winning host, mailed by Nov. 15.
  • We email each winner to confirm the name on the check.

How winners are picked

  • People's Choice goes to the porch with the most votes.
  • In the other five awards, judges score each porch from 1 to 10. The best judges' average earns 70 points and the most votes earn 30; every other porch earns its share of each, and the highest total wins.
  • Each household can win one award. We give out awards from the highest score down, so a porch that leads two awards keeps the one with the higher score (the bigger prize if the scores are equal), and the next porch takes the other.
  • The judges break exact ties.

Photo rules

  • Your own decorations, this season.
  • A real photo. No AI-made scenes.
  • A reviewer checks every photo before it shows.

Dates

  • Voting: open now until Sat., Oct. 31, 11:59 PM.
  • Entries and photos: until Thu., Oct. 29, 11:59 PM.
  • Final voting: Fri., Oct. 30 to Sat., Oct. 31. The entries are set.
  • Winners: Sun., Nov. 1, on this page.
  • Checks mailed: by Nov. 15.
  • All times are Central.

Fine print

  • This is a judged contest with a public vote, not a drawing.
  • No purchase necessary.
