There are several excellent fishing spots near Gainesville:
Lake Texoma (20-25 minutes north)
- One of the best fishing lakes in Texas/Oklahoma
- Known for: Striped bass (striper), smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, catfish, crappie
- Fishing License: Texas or Oklahoma license (with Lake Texoma special permit for the other state)
- Multiple boat ramps and marinas on both sides
Lake Ray Roberts (30-40 minutes south)
- 29,000-acre reservoir
- Known for: Largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, white bass
- Access: Multiple parks and boat ramps
- Popular shore fishing at Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois units
Moss Lake (10 minutes north)
- City of Gainesville lake
- Smaller, more peaceful setting
- Good for bank fishing and small boats
- Bass, catfish, and crappie
Other Options:
- Red River: Accessible in several areas north of Gainesville
- City ponds/tanks: Leonard Park and other city parks may have small fishing ponds
Licenses: Texas freshwater fishing license required for ages 17+. Available at Walmart, Academy Sports, online at tpwd.texas.gov, or via the TX Outdoor Annual app.
