America 250: Medal of Honor Museum Enters Second Year as Gainesville Marks 25 Years as Host City

Gainesville reaches the nation's 250th Independence Day with the Medal of Honor Host City Museum in its second year of operation at 1525 W. California St. on the North Central Texas College site, in a year the city's own calendar connects to the 25th anniversary of Gainesville's designation as America's Official Medal of Honor Host City.

North Central Texas College announced that the museum was officially open to the public on its Gainesville campus. The city's event calendar had listed a ribbon-cutting for the museum on April 10, 2025, a date that falls more than a year ahead of this Fourth of July.

According to the museum's website, its mission is to honor Medal of Honor recipients through exhibits, programming and outreach that present the recipients' courage, their sacrifices, their patriotism and the stories of their lives. The museum says its collection keeps those accounts in view with artifacts that belonged to recipients and with items contributed by recipients' families.

Local tax dollars went into the project. Gainesville City Council records show the council voted 7-0 on Feb. 21, 2023, to approve $280,000 in hotel occupancy tax funds for North Central Texas College to put toward the museum. Cooke County's adopted budget for fiscal year 2025 carried a separate $50,000 hotel occupancy tax allocation for the museum, listed among tourism items that also covered the Muenster Chamber of Commerce and Heritage Park.

The museum shares its name with the Medal of Honor Host City Program, which states on its website that it began in 2001. In its published program summary, the organization reported it had hosted 56 of the 60 living Medal of Honor recipients as of that summary. The program describes each year's arrival as a regional occasion: recipients are escorted by motorcade from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Gainesville, and communities along the route take part in the welcome, according to the program's website.

The 2026 Medal of Honor Banquet carries anniversary billing. Gainesville's 2026 city calendar describes the event as part of the 25th anniversary of the city's designation as America's Official Medal of Honor Host City and says recipients and their families are part of the gathering.

The building has also served as a classroom. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society scheduled a Character Development Program training session for elementary school educators at the Gainesville museum on July 22, 2025, according to the society's event listing.
