America's 250th birthday arrives Saturday, with local programs written into the federal plan

The United States turns 250 on Saturday. Congress fixed the anniversary at July 4, 2026, in federal law, and the same statute created a national commission whose coordinating assignment runs from international observances down to activities organized in individual communities.

Federal planning for the anniversary also spells out what a commemoration can be. Lectures and seminars are named as acceptable activities, according to the law, and so are exhibits at museums and historic sites. The list closes with an open category, other educational programs, which extends the framework to formats the drafters did not name one by one. Under the terms Congress adopted, a history talk delivered to a community audience is an acceptable way to mark the occasion.

The body behind the effort is the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, established under Public Law 114-196, the United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016. The act directs the panel to coordinate activities marking the anniversary at four levels, and local activity leads the statute's own list, ahead of state, national and international observances. Because the mandate begins at the community level, an event organized in a single town belongs to the same federal effort as a program staged for a national audience. That reach covers Cooke County as it does everywhere else; a commemoration organized in an area community would fall within the local category the act names.

The law's term for the milestone is the semiquincentennial, the 250-year mark. Federal planning for the observance also uses a shorter working label, America 250. By the same count, the nation's bicentennial fell in 1976.

Congress moved a decade ahead of the calendar. The act became law in 2016, ten years before the date it points to, and the anniversary it marks counts 250 years from the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
