Aransas Pass ISD plans Aug. 6 emergency exercise with police, area first responders

Aransas Pass ISD plans to hold a joint emergency exercise with the Aransas Pass Police Department and other first responders from the surrounding area on Thursday, Aug. 6, according to a notice the district posted on its Facebook page. The training falls six days before the district's scheduled first day of classes.

The district behind the notice is not a Gainesville or Cooke County school system. APISD here is the Aransas Pass Independent School District, and its records list the district's address as 748 W. Goodnight Ave. in Aransas Pass, Texas 78336. None of the records reviewed for this report names a Gainesville-area agency as a participant.

The district's 2026-27 family calendar lists Aug. 12, 2026, as the first day of school. That places the exercise and the opening of the school year in the same month, with less than a week between them.

The calendar behind that start date was adopted after a staff vote. According to an agenda item prepared for the district's school board, the 2026-27 calendar received 62.1% of the votes cast, and the District Educational Improvement Committee reviewed it.

An Aug. 12 opening comes earlier than the default under state law. Section 25.0811 of the Texas Education Code generally bars districts from starting student instruction before the fourth Monday in August. The Texas Education Agency's current District of Innovation list includes Aransas Pass ISD, and the agency says that designation can exempt a district from some Education Code requirements identified in a local innovation plan. The district's earlier start date sits within that calendar-flexibility framework.

School-site training with the police department has a recent history in the district. Its online news feed shows a comparable joint exercise with Aransas Pass police and area first responders on Aug. 6, 2025, held around A.C. Blunt Middle School, Aransas Pass High School and the district's football stadium. That event took place on the same calendar date one year before the upcoming exercise. The feed also records a week of police department training hosted at Aransas Pass High School from June 22 through June 28, 2025.

The notice describes the participants beyond the police department as "other area first responders." The city's dispatch arrangements offer some context on which agencies serve the area. According to the Aransas Pass Police Department's dispatch page, a single shared operation handles dispatch for the city's police, fire department and Tri-County EMS, and Tri-County EMS responds to calls in Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Ingleside on the Bay and nearby communities.
