Tickets for the 128th Battle of the Ax are scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, through the Denison ISD Athletics ticket site, according to Sherman ISD. Sherman ISD identifies the Aug. 28 game as the Sherman Bearcats against the Denison Yellow Jackets at Munson Stadium in Denison; for Gainesville-area fans planning to attend, Denison ISD's ticket page says sporting-event tickets are sold online through HomeTown, with no cash sales at the gate and credit or debit cards only.
The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, according to Sherman ISD. The district describes the Battle of the Ax as one of Texas' oldest high school football rivalries and says this year's game is the 128th meeting.
Sherman ISD also lists Aug. 17 on its district calendar as the day Battle of the Ax ticket sales begin and lists Aug. 28 as the date of the 128th Battle of the Ax at Munson Stadium. The public calendar entry for ticket sales says sales begin at 8 a.m.
Buyers should not use Sherman ISD's standard home-game ticket schedule as the rule for this event. Sherman ISD's athletics ticket page says varsity football single-game tickets for home games usually become available at 8 a.m. on the Monday before each home game, but the page excludes the Battle of the Ax from that usual home-game process. Sherman ISD's Battle of the Ax notice directs buyers to the Denison ISD Athletics ticket site.
The ticket platform listed by Denison ISD is HomeTown. Denison ISD's athletics ticket page says sporting-event tickets can be bought online through HomeTown and says cash will not be accepted at the gate. It also says payment is limited to credit and debit cards.
The venue is another planning detail for Sherman fans. Sherman ISD says its new multipurpose stadium, funded through the district's 2023 bond program, is scheduled to open in September 2026 with seating for about 8,000 spectators. The district says the first varsity football game in that stadium is set for Sept. 18. Sherman ISD's calendar and Battle of the Ax notice list the Aug. 28 Sherman-Denison game at Munson Stadium in Denison instead.
Gainesville ISD also points athletic ticket buyers online. The Gainesville Junior High website says home athletic game tickets are purchased online, a ticketing setup similar to what Denison ISD describes for its sporting events.
