Bryan County deputies disperse July 4 crowd, reopen State Highway 91 near Cartwright, Okla.

Sheriff's deputies broke up an unsanctioned Fourth of July gathering near the intersection of State Highway 91 and Boat Club Road in the Cartwright area after 10 p.m. on July 4, clearing a crowd from the highway and reopening it to traffic, the Bryan County Sheriff's Office said in a public statement. Cartwright sits in Bryan County, Oklahoma, across Lake Texoma from Denison, Texas, and the response was handled by an Oklahoma agency; the incident did not take place in Gainesville or Cooke County.

Callers reported guns, fights, underage drinking, people standing in the roadway and fireworks being set off on State Highway 91, according to the sheriff's office. The agency said deputies were answering repeated calls for service through the evening, not a single isolated complaint, and it described the gathering as disorderly and unsanctioned. The office posted its account of the dispersal publicly on its Facebook page, and that statement is the source for the details of the night reported here.

Public records match the location the agency gave. The U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System lists Cartwright as a census designated place in Bryan County, Oklahoma. A county map published by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation shows the community along that state's Highway 91.

The holiday came weeks after Oklahoma changed part of its fireworks law. Senate Bill 1948, named the Rocket's Red Glare Act, passed the state Senate 39-5 and the House 83-10, then cleared a final Senate vote 38-6 before the governor approved it, according to the Legislature's record of the measure. The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal said in a press release that the act limits county fireworks restrictions only for private, noncommercial displays of consumer fireworks, and only when the display takes place on private property, no county burn ban is active, no Red Flag Fire Warning is in effect and the fire department that would respond has been notified.

Cities on both sides of the lake keep their own rules. Durant, the Bryan County seat, allows individuals to discharge fireworks inside city limits only on July 4 from 8 a.m. to midnight unless the City Council sets a different time, according to a notice published by the city. Denison prohibits personal fireworks within its city limits, according to the city, and handles the holiday's fireworks through an official event; it planned its 39th annual Fourth of July celebration for July 4, 2026, at Munson Stadium and Forest Park.
