Denison Bell Program Joins Nationwide Tolling for America's 250th

Bells rang in Denison on Saturday, July 4, as part of Freedom Bells, a nationwide tolling held to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, according to an event listing published on Denison Live. The listing says the Texoma Patriots joined the national observance with a local program at 601 W. Woodard St. that began at 11:55 a.m.

The program was one of several America 250 events in the area over the holiday weekend. Denison scheduled a citywide celebration for the same day, and in Cooke County, Gainesville held its first Great American Birthday Bash on Friday, July 3, the day before. The America 250 name refers to commemorations of the semiquincentennial, the formal term for a 250th anniversary.

The Denison start time tracked a national schedule. On its website, the Freedom Bells organization says its bell-tolling events for the semiquincentennial began at 12 noon local time in communities across the United States and in other countries. Denison Live's listing describes the local program as joining that nationwide tolling, and its 11:55 a.m. start came five minutes before the noon hour.

Freedom Bells was not the only appeal for ringing on the holiday. The National Bell Festival also invited bells across the United States to sound on Independence Day for the nation's 250th birthday, according to the festival's website. Both organizations tied their invitations to the country's 250th year, according to their sites.

In Denison, the tolling shared the date with a larger civic event. The City of Denison and Downtown Denison presented the Fourth of July Spectacular - Denison Celebrates America250 on Saturday at Forest Park and Munson Stadium, according to the event's page on Discover Denison.

The Spectacular predates the anniversary year. In a notice posted before the holiday, the city described the fireworks celebration as the 39th annual Fourth of July Spectacular and called it the continuation of a long-running Denison tradition rather than a new one-time event.

Gainesville's observance was in its first year. The city held the inaugural Great American Birthday Bash on Friday, July 3, at Gainesville Municipal Airport, according to the city's website, which listed music, vendors, family activities and fireworks for the gathering. The city's page presented the Bash as Gainesville's own marking of the semiquincentennial.
