Gainesville firefighters sent out again for statewide flood response

Gainesville Fire-Rescue sent five firefighters, two apparatus and two rescue boats out of the city on July 12, 2026 to help with a coordinated flood response across Texas, according to city records. That was the second July in a row in which the department put crews on a flood assignment outside Gainesville.

KTEN featured Gainesville firefighters who serve on a rescue team in an installment of its First Responder Fridays series, posted on the station's Facebook page. City documentation identifies the local unit as Gainesville's Swift Water Rescue Team, staffed by Fire-Rescue personnel.

The deployment date matches a statewide mobilization. The Texas Division of Emergency Management's emergency-response record for July 12, 2026 lists Texas A&M Task Force 1 swiftwater rescue boat squads, urban search-and-rescue teams and rescue swimmers among the resources activated for flood rescues. That record names Central Texas among the regions affected. The city's own account does not name a destination for the Gainesville crew, describing the assignment only as support for a response spanning Texas.

A year earlier, on July 7, 2025, the department sent six firefighters with Task Force 1 to assist with catastrophic flooding in Kerr County and Kerrville, city records show. Those back-to-back July call-outs make the 2026 mission the department's next summer of flood assistance away from Gainesville.

July was not the squad's first activation of 2026. Task Force 1 activated the Gainesville team in March 2026 for a regional severe-weather response and pre-staged it in Sherman, the city reported. Records also show six Gainesville firefighters deploying with Task Force 1 in May 2024 for flooding in southeast Texas, an assignment that fell outside the summer months.

The unit grew out of a flood at home. City documentation says Gainesville built the Swift Water Rescue Team after the deadly 2007 Pecan Creek flood, and that Texas A&M Task Force 1 accepted the team in 2009. The same documentation describes the team as a deployable state water-rescue asset.

Denton Fire Department also operates a similar Swift Water Rescue Squad. A City of Denton public record says the squad works under Texas A&M Task Force 1 and the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and that it made its first out-of-state deployment in July 2024, to Ruidoso, New Mexico. The Denton record lists the costs of that assignment as eligible for reimbursement.

The verified records for the July 2026 mission do not include rescue counts, a return date, the names of the deployed Gainesville firefighters or a description of the work the team performed after it arrived.
