Gainesville flood watch set for Wednesday as heavy rain threatens Texoma

A flood watch is scheduled to take effect in Gainesville Wednesday afternoon as repeated storms bring a risk of flooding to Texoma, according to the National Weather Service’s Sept. 29 forecast. The agency’s regional outlook places the flooding threat from Wednesday through Friday, with its safety guidance identifying flooded roads as a danger for drivers. Forecasters expected the heaviest stretch of rainfall Wednesday night through late Thursday night. The Fort Worth office attributed the storm threat to plentiful moisture meeting a weather system moving slowly through the region. NWS Fort Worth.

A watch indicates that flooding could develop; a flood or flash-flood warning means it is underway or about to occur, according to NWS. NWS guidance. Cooke County has experienced deadly flash flooding. NOAA’s Storm Events Database documents deaths and property losses from the June 2007 flood, along with emergency managers’ reports of high-water rescues and Gainesville residents opening holes in roofs to escape.

The Army Corps of Engineers’ project history lists that flood among several major Gainesville floods preceding improvements to Pecan Creek. The Corps reports that widening the creek channel tripled its capacity to carry water. The project was completed in July 2013.
