Grass fire spreads into hay field near Gregg Road in Krum before crews put it out

Firefighters brought an afternoon grass fire under control and put it out after it spread into a hay field in the area of Gregg Road and Miller Road in Krum, according to a public incident post from Krum firefighters. The post reported no injuries to civilians or to fire-service personnel.

The fire was moving north when Krum crews reached it, the post said, and the hay field was involved by the time they arrived. Firefighters said the flames were brought under control and then extinguished.

More than one agency answered the call. Krum crews worked with mutual-aid partners, according to the post, which named the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department, the Krum Police Department, the Krum Fire Department and the City of Krum. Under mutual aid, a department calls on its neighbors when an incident demands more people or equipment than it has on hand.

The fire burned outside Cooke County. Krum is in west-central Denton County, according to the city's website, not in the Gainesville area.

The Krum Fire Department keeps equipment meant for fires in grass and open ground. The department's website lists brush trucks among its apparatus, along with a tanker that holds 3,000 gallons of water and a utility task vehicle outfitted for wildland response and emergency medical work. Brush trucks are smaller vehicles designed to fight fire off the pavement.

Krum and Ponder crews also have a working history that predates this fire. The Krum Fire Department says on its website that it has provided advanced life support and emergency transport to the community served by the Ponder Volunteer Fire Department under an agreement that began in 2005 and remains in effect.

Denton County sets its outdoor burning rules one day at a time. The county makes a daily determination on whether it is a burn day, according to its public burn-control page. Anyone planning a controlled burn in the county's unincorporated areas needs a permit first, and the county tells residents who live inside city limits to check with local authorities before any outdoor burning.

The firefighters' post did not include a calendar date for the incident, and none appears in this report for that reason.
