Grayson County Jail Record Lists Aggravated Assault Charge After Denison Arrest

Grayson County jail records list Stacey Dawn Garza as booked Aug. 15 on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and name the Denison Police Department as the arresting agency. She was released three days later after posting a $30,000 surety bond, according to the record, in a case that lands in a year when state data put Denison's aggravated-assault rate within a point of Gainesville's.

The file, booking number 2026-3051, gives Aug. 14 as the offense date and marks the arrest warrantless, or on view, meaning officers made it without a warrant already in hand.

Beyond the charge itself, the record carries no account of what officers say happened. It names no weapon and no location. Nothing in it summarizes what a complainant or a witness told police. A charge is an accusation, and the record shows no conviction.

Section 22.02 of the Texas Penal Code counts an assault as aggravated when the accused uses or exhibits a deadly weapon during it, and generally sets the offense at the second-degree level unless one of the aggravating circumstances the statute lists applies. Section 12.33 puts punishment in that range at two to 20 years in prison, with a fine that can reach $10,000.

Denison is a nearby Texoma city, and Cooke County readers can find their own agencies in the same state workbooks. Texas Department of Public Safety Crime by Jurisdiction data show Denison's aggravated-assault count rising from 2024 while staying under the 2023 figure. Cleared cases have slipped in each of the three years.

| Denison PD | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |

|---|---:|---:|---:|

| Aggravated-assault offenses | 47 | 30 | 38 |

| Rate per 100,000 | 172.4 | 111.2 | 141.0 |

| Clearances | 19 | 16 | 14 |

Among near neighbors in the 2025 workbook, Sherman PD reported the highest rate and the Cooke County Sheriff's Office the lowest. Gainesville and Denison land almost on top of each other. The same workbook counts family-violence incidents separately, and there Gainesville's total runs above Denison's.

| Agency | 2025 agg. assault rate per 100,000 | 2025 family-violence incidents |

|---|---:|---:|

| Sherman PD | 225.3 | 562 |

| Denison PD | 141.0 | 116 |

| Gainesville PD | 140.4 | 174 |

| Grayson County SO | 136.8 | 181 |

| Cooke County SO | 92.2 | 102 |

Denison's police annual-report page says the department recorded no rise in crime in 2025 and points to new technology and equipment it bought to improve officer safety, accountability and response times.

Statewide the direction is down. DPS's 2025 Crime in Texas report counts 76,580 aggravated-assault offenses, off about 11 percent in a year and roughly 17 percent below 2021, with violent-crime volume down close to 12 percent. DPS says Texas now accepts only NIBRS-format data, after the FBI retired Summary Reporting at the end of 2020, and that state law made participation mandatory Sept. 1, 2023.

Grayson County posts its jail records online. This entry reflects the booking, and it can change as the case moves through the courts.
