Grayson County Master Gardeners list junior program for young growers

Grayson County Master Gardeners lists a Junior Master Gardeners program among its youth education offerings, according to the organization's project listing. To earn certification in the national program, children work in a registered group and finish service or leadership projects, according to its certification rules.

The organization's published address is the Grayson County Courthouse, 100 W. Houston Street in Sherman. That address is in Sherman, not in Gainesville or anywhere else in Cooke County. The group reports that it has worked with Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site on gardening education since 2004.

GvilleTX could not independently verify a reported appearance by members of the group on the broadcast Talk of the Town to discuss the program.

The youth program grew out of adult Master Gardener training. Four Texas A&M authors introduced it as a new program in a 1999 Journal of Extension article. They wrote that its gardening lessons were meant to build leadership and responsibility in young people and to involve them in their communities.

The national Junior Master Gardener office now calls it an international Extension program. Its users include schools, homeschool groups, 4-H, Scouts and libraries. Groups register at no charge, the office says. Curriculum and supplies still cost money, and the amount differs from group to group.

Full Level One certification takes dozens of group and individual activities, the rules say. Shorter certification paths also exist.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's 2023 Learn, Grow, Eat & GO! report found that more participants said they enjoyed gardening after the program than before it. The share rose from about three in five to about four in five. Those figures come from a statewide participant survey. They do not measure the Grayson County program.

In Denton County, Master Gardeners advertised a weekly junior program at Shiloh Garden for third through fifth graders. It started in November 2024. The fee was $20 a child, and scholarships were offered. The group reported in its May 2026 newsletter that six children earned certification on April 7 after most of a year of lessons and a set of service projects. Sprouts grants paid for the program, and Shiloh Field Community Garden supplied classroom and garden space.

Collin County Master Gardeners took another route. In September 2023, the association described its garden club at Caldwell Elementary in McKinney as a free monthly program that used Junior Master Gardener materials. It reported that the garden's best harvest by then was roughly double its 2018 yield. The association first managed the garden that year.

The same September 2023 account said the Caldwell garden needed more than 1,000 volunteer hours a year. Volunteers did much of the summer harvesting while school was out, the association reported.
