Gunter's Aug. 31, 2026, town hall drew a capacity crowd for a public discussion of growth, giving Gainesville-area readers a nearby look at the road, school and tax pressures moving north through rural North Texas. Gunter ISD Superintendent Brandon Enos wrote in a public Facebook post that the room had reached standing-room-only and that the fire chief had stopped allowing more people inside.
The turnout came as public records place Gunter in the path of Dallas-area development. City demographic materials say growth is moving north along the Preston Road and Dallas North Tollway corridor, and TxDOT says proposed FM 121 work around Gunter is meant to prepare for more traffic, longer delays and safety concerns.
TxDOT's plan includes the Gunter Relief Route south of town and a separate FM 121W widening west of SH 289, according to state project materials. TxDOT says future Dallas North Tollway expansion would send more traffic toward Grayson County, where drivers now pass through Gunter to connect FM 121 and SH 289.
Grayson County Commissioner Josh Marr announced the forum as a public chance to hear about Gunter and the surrounding area, with questions from residents and participation by Commissioner Lindsay Wright, Gunter ISD and the City of Gunter, according to Marr's public post. County webpages identify Marr as Precinct 1 commissioner and Wright as Precinct 3 commissioner, and describe commissioners' duties as including county roads and bridges, subdivision review, infrastructure planning, budgets and tax rates.
Gunter sits in southern Grayson County, which the Census Bureau estimated at 153,613 residents on July 1, 2025, up 13.3 percent from the 2020 estimates base. Gunter ISD's district overview says it serves students across more than 66 square miles, and the district reported 1,233 students on the first day of the 2026-27 school year.
The meeting also followed a county tax vote. Grayson County Commissioners Court's Aug. 25 agenda shows adoption of a 2026-27 total county rate of $0.3051 per $100 valuation and says the new budget would collect more property-tax revenue than the prior year's budget, including money from new property.
Gunter ISD has its own growth calendar. The district scheduled 2026 State of the District meetings to cover a demographic study, future growth, Bond 2022 updates, finances, program changes and community questions for Enos. Its district overview says Gunter ISD uses demographic studies, facility assessments and long-range planning to prepare for future facilities.
The broader pattern is not limited to Gunter. The Census Bureau reported the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area at about 8.5 million residents in 2025 and identified Celina as the metro area's fastest-growing place from 2020 to 2025. The Texas Demographic Center says Texas' population growth since 2020 has been concentrated mainly in major metropolitan areas.
Cooke County records give local readers a tax comparison point: the county's published tax-rate history lists a higher 2025-26 county rate than Grayson's new rate, and Gainesville-area tax sheets list city, school, road, college and hospital district levies stacked on local bills. Gunter's meeting is a nearby example of how growth reaches ordinary local decisions: which roads carry the traffic, when schools need more space and how much of the cost lands on taxpayers.
