A juvenile driver accused of multiple felony offenses after a late-night Grayson County pursuit now enters a North Texas juvenile system that also serves Cooke County, according to Whitewright Police and Grayson County juvenile records. Police said the August 23, 2026, incident began just after midnight on US Highway 69 at Sears Road, where an officer tried to stop a vehicle for a Texas Transportation Code violation.

Whitewright Police said the vehicle drove away as the officer approached. The pursuit continued on US Highway 69, then went west on State Highway 56 in Bells, according to the department.

The chase ended near State Highway 56 and FM 1417 after a Grayson County Sheriff's Office deputy used a Tactical Vehicle Intervention maneuver, Whitewright Police said. Officers and deputies found four juveniles in the vehicle, and police said the juvenile driver was taken into custody on multiple felony offenses. No injuries were reported, according to the department.

Police did not identify the driver or passengers. The department also did not list the specific felony counts in the public statement.

Texas law separates different kinds of flight from police. Under Texas Penal Code Section 38.04, a person commits evading arrest or detention by intentionally fleeing from someone the person knows is a peace officer attempting a lawful arrest or detention; the same section says using a vehicle while fleeing can raise the offense to a felony. A separate Transportation Code provision covers fleeing or trying to elude a police vehicle after a signal to stop and sets misdemeanor penalties, with a higher misdemeanor level when the conduct recklessly places another person in imminent danger of serious bodily injury.

Because Whitewright Police described the accused driver as a juvenile, the case begins under juvenile-law procedures rather than the ordinary adult criminal process. Texas Family Code Section 51.02 defines who is treated as a child for juvenile-justice purposes. If a child is detained, Section 54.01 generally requires a prompt detention hearing no later than the second working day after custody, with a faster rule for some Friday or Saturday detentions.

Grayson County Juvenile Services says Texas juvenile cases are civil proceedings but carry protections similar to criminal cases. The department says felony juvenile referrals must be sent to the juvenile prosecutor under the statutory default intake plan, and deferred prosecution in a felony matter requires prosecutor consent.

For Cooke County readers, the local stake is practical. The Cooke, Fannin and Grayson County Juvenile Detention Center primarily serves those three counties, according to Grayson County juvenile records. The center's latest annual financial report says the regional facility was created by interlocal agreement in 1983 and that, after charges and grants, Cooke and Fannin counties each share a smaller portion of costs while Grayson County carries the largest share.

State juvenile records give the case a wider frame. The Texas Juvenile Justice Department says formal referrals and violent-felony referrals fell during the pandemic but have returned near pre-pandemic levels. The International Association of Chiefs of Police, in a 2025 pursuit resource, says agencies weighing vehicle pursuits must consider whether a chase best protects the public because pursuits carry danger for both officers and bystanders.
