No state record found for reported crash on Highway 289 near Lake Texoma

A crash said to have blocked State Highway 289 near Lake Texoma on Saturday evening did not appear in the Texas Department of Transportation's public traffic records when GvilleTX Newsroom checked them Monday, and the Pottsboro corridor at the lake's southern end, as described in available municipal records, lies in Grayson County, not Cooke County.

TxDOT's Paris District incident feed, the agency's running public list of active traffic incidents for the region that takes in the Lake Texoma end of SH 289, showed no entry matching the reported crash on July 6. The district's lane-closure feed carried no active closure on the highway tied to a wreck.

An empty feed does not settle whether the crash happened. Both TxDOT lists reflect current conditions, so a blockage cleared before Monday would no longer show on either one. State law adds a second lag. Under Section 550.062 of the Texas Transportation Code, an investigating officer has until the tenth day after a qualifying collision to file the crash report with TxDOT, meaning a wreck from July 3 or July 4 could still be missing from public records on July 6.

No official record reviewed for this story established when the crash occurred, how many vehicles were involved, whether anyone was hurt, or which agency responded. The precise location is likewise unconfirmed.

The municipal records that do cover the area describe a Grayson County corridor. Pottsboro, a Grayson County city, identifies itself in its own documents as sitting on SH 289 and FM 120 at the southern end of Lake Texoma. The city's codified highway-development standards treat those two roads, along with Spur 316, as important routes linking the lake with nearby communities and the wider highway network.

City agencies along the route may also publish their own closure alerts. Farther south on the same highway, the Celina Police Department has used its official Facebook page to announce that SH 289, known there as Preston Road, was closed after a crash and later reopened. GvilleTX Newsroom had not located a comparable statement from any agency about the reported Lake Texoma wreck as of Monday.

The corridor has drawn state attention apart from any single incident. In a 2023 public-meeting notice, TxDOT described a proposal to widen SH 289 in Grayson County from FM 120 to Elks Boulevard, converting about 7.01 miles of two-lane road into a five-lane section. The notice said construction had not been funded.
