For Cooke County residents trying to check custody status or police records, the official local sources point to the county jail's custody lookup and to written records-request channels instead.
Cooke County's detention center page directs the public to an online inmate-custody lookup for checking whether a person is in jail. The Gainesville Police Department says police reports and other records can be requested through its records clerk; under the department's posted process, people who are not associated with the incident must submit an open-records request.
Cooke County's public-information page sets out a separate rule for county records: requests must be in writing and sent to the department that holds the records. The county says an inquiry sent to the wrong office can slow the response because one department does not control another department's records.
That distinction matters when arrest information moves around the community before it is tied to a docket, police report or jail record. Cooke County's own detention center page lists the jail as a 212-bed facility in Gainesville with 45 employees. The same county page links custody checks to the jail lookup rather than to a separate daily arrest-report page.
Other official records show how arrest data can appear outside a daily booking list. In the Cooke County Sheriff's Office 2025 racial profiling report, the office reported 1,897 motor-vehicle stops, with 96 stop outcomes falling into arrest categories. Gainesville Police said in a Feb. 2, 2026, racial-profiling release that Texas law requires law-enforcement agencies to file annual motor-vehicle-stop reports with TCOLE and the governing body by March 1.
