Gainesville High School's 2026-27 football season will proceed with L.J. Searcy as interim head coach after Gainesville ISD appointed him to lead the Leopards and the University Interscholastic League announced sanctions against Neil Searcy. For local families, the change identifies who will run the football program this season, while the district says UIL probation does not keep Gainesville teams out of district or postseason competition.
Gainesville ISD said L.J. Searcy's Gainesville background and years with student-athletes made him a natural choice for the interim job. In its Aug. 6 message after the UIL hearing, the district said it would name an interim coach to give the program leadership and stability after Neil Searcy's suspension.
The district identifies L.J. Searcy as a lifelong Gainesville resident, a 2003 Gainesville High School graduate and a 2007 graduate of East Texas A&M University. Gainesville ISD said he started with the district in 2016, served three years as junior high athletic coordinator and had spent the prior six years at Gainesville High School as a teacher and athletic coordinator. The district identified his children as Konner, Karter and Ellie.
The UIL State Executive Committee noticed the case for an Aug. 6, 2026, hearing on a District 6-4A Executive Committee referral involving Gainesville High School, Neil Searcy and Section 51(b)(1) school-district personnel violations. Gainesville ISD said its internal investigation confirmed football practices using helmets and shoulder pads from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on May 6, 8, 11, 12, 13 and 14, and the district said it voluntarily reported the offseason-practice violation to UIL.
UIL announced that Neil Searcy received a one-season football suspension, three years' probation, a public reprimand and added training. UIL also announced a four-practice preseason suspension and the loss of one scrimmage for the Gainesville High School football program. Gainesville ISD said the suspension removed Neil Searcy from the head-football-coach role; the district's central-administration page lists him as Director, Athletics.
UIL's football plan allows spring football practice days in Conferences 5A and 6A, while Conference 4A programs follow the regular UIL calendar for practice starts. UIL rules also prohibit football contact or restricted equipment in offseason sessions. Under UIL rules, the State Executive Committee may reprimand, put on probation or suspend school district personnel after rule violations.
Gainesville football is assigned by UIL to Conference 4A Division II, District 6, with Krum, Lake Worth, Ponder, Sanger and Van Alstyne. The official Leopards schedule lists regular-season district games against those schools.
Published UIL notices from December 2025 and March 2026 show other Section 51 personnel cases that ended with penalties including probation and coaching suspensions. Separate UIL health rules beginning in 2026-27 require Wet Bulb Globe Temperature checks for outdoor UIL athletic and marching-band activities before practice and, when the plan applies, during practice.
UIL archives also record Gainesville's football history. They list the 2003 Leopards as 3A Division I state champions after a 15-0 season and record Gainesville's 2005 title-game loss to Wimberley.
