Sherman-Denison unemployment rate climbed to a preliminary 4.7% in June

The Sherman-Denison metropolitan area's unemployment rate reached a preliminary 4.7% in June 2026, up from 4.1% a month earlier, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The 0.6 percentage-point increase is the newest published reading on the Texoma labor market, and it arrived in a month when the same area's payroll job count grew rather than shrank.

Two agencies put the June figures into public view. The Texas Workforce Commission issued its June 2026 Texas labor-market release on July 17, carrying the month's workforce numbers along with the state's table of metropolitan unemployment rates. BLS followed on July 29 with its own June metropolitan employment and unemployment release, which lists Sherman-Denison at 4.7%. Both sets of June numbers were in circulation before the end of July.

The job counts moved the other way. On its area page for Sherman-Denison, BLS puts total nonfarm employment at 55.3 thousand in May and 55.4 thousand in June. Mining, logging and construction rose from 4.0 thousand to 4.1 thousand across the same two months.

BLS labels the June rate preliminary and publishes it without seasonal adjustment. The same area page carries the jobless rate and the payroll series side by side.

Construction around Sherman was on the public record well before the June rate came out. A housing study prepared for the city in 2024 counted 3,745 housing units under construction and put another 8,143 units in the remaining development pipeline. Those figures cover units being built and units still in the pipeline at the time the study was compiled.

The Sherman Economic Development Corporation traces the city's industrial activity to a vote taken three decades ago. On its history page, SEDCO says Sherman voters adopted an economic-development sales tax in 1995 and that the corporation was incorporated the following year. Among the recent projects the organization lists are GlobalWafers at $4 billion and Coherent at $650 million.

Denison has its own set of tools. The city-affiliated Denison Development Alliance says on its website that the City of Denison, the alliance and the Denison Development Foundation offer local grants and financial incentives to businesses.

Development paperwork kept moving through Cooke County government during the same summer weeks. The agenda for the July 27, 2026 meeting of the Cooke County Commissioners Court included a consent item listed as "Subdivision & Development - June 2026 v1." The item appeared under the consent portion of that agenda.

Neither the Texas Workforce Commission's July 17 release nor the BLS metropolitan release assigns a cause to the June increase in the Sherman-Denison rate.
