Sherman ISD moves ahead on land, contracts for second new elementary

Sherman ISD's board of trustees took up the next steps for a second new elementary campus at its June 15, 2026, meeting, with the posted agenda listing construction-manager contracts and a contract to purchase roughly 21.601 acres in south Sherman for the project. The district plans to open the school, which it refers to as New Elementary #2, in fall 2028.

The agenda grouped the items under that project name and called for action on construction agreements tied to Construction Manager at Risk work, along with a real-property purchase contract for about 21.601 acres, according to the board documents.

A packet prepared for the meeting states that district staff had settled terms with Pogue Construction to act as Construction Manager at Risk on the campus, and it recommended that trustees approve the contracts.

That same packet lays out how Sherman ISD reached this point. Trustees selected Construction Manager at Risk as the procurement method on May 15, 2023, then approved rankings of the competing firms on June 26, 2023, before Pogue's contracts were carried forward for the second elementary.

Sherman ISD has said it is going ahead with buying a 21.6-acre tract in south Sherman for the school. On its newsroom page, the district places the site along West Travis Street near Northgate Drive.

The district's bond-program webpage lists WRA Architects as the architect and Pogue Construction as the general contractor, with the building scheduled to open in fall 2028.

Both new elementaries come out of the district's 2023 bond program, according to Sherman ISD. The first, Parker Elementary, opened in 2025 in northwest Sherman.

The district has linked the south Sherman campus to later changes at other buildings. Once the new school is finished, Sherman ISD says it intends to close Dillingham Elementary and turn that building into a middle school campus ahead of renovations at Piner Middle School. The district also says its 2025 elementary attendance-zone revisions were drawn with the coming campus in mind, so the 2028 school was already part of how the boundaries were set.

Similar growth is driving work at nearby districts, though the plans differ. Denison ISD's bond page describes expansions at Houston and Lamar elementary schools rather than a new campus. Van Alstyne ISD says it bought an elementary site west of Interstate 75 in Mantua and that the new school there was needed for the 2026-27 school year and is under construction.
