Sherman ISD welcomes 93 new teachers at Chamber's 20th annual luncheon

Sherman Independent School District's newest teachers were welcomed Friday, July 31, at Sherman High School during a luncheon the Sherman Chamber of Commerce billed as its 20th annual gathering for incoming district educators, according to the Chamber's event listing and a Sherman ISD social media post. The 2026 group included 93 teachers new to Sherman ISD, 24 of them first-year educators, the Chamber said in a post about the day.

Sherman is in Grayson County, not Cooke County. The district, the chamber and the high school named here all sit in Grayson County.

The Chamber also put the combined classroom experience of this year's group at 717 years. The Chamber posted those counts after the luncheon, and Sherman ISD wrote about the day on its own Facebook page.

The teachers met the community 11 days before class starts. Sherman ISD's back-to-school page lists Tuesday, Aug. 11, as the first day of the 2026-27 school year.

The Chamber has held the luncheon annually, and its listing identified this year's as the 20th.

That listing described the event as a chance for local businesses, community leaders and educators to connect with the teachers joining the district. It also spelled out ways companies could take part: underwriting the meal as lunch sponsor, sponsoring tables, partnering on swag or staffing a vendor table. The options ranged from a single lunch sponsor down to individual vendor tables.

In its post about the event, Sherman ISD wrote, "A community that supports its teachers is a community that invests in its future."

The luncheon is one piece of what the district describes as a longer onboarding effort. Sherman ISD has said it introduced a mentorship program during the 2024-25 school year that pairs teachers new to the district with experienced educators, support the district describes as extending beyond the luncheon. The district laid out the program in a post on its own newsroom page.

Sherman ISD has separately reported results from the state's Teacher Incentive Allotment, which the district describes as a teacher-retention incentive. Its first allotment group covered 94 designated classroom teachers and generated more than $950,000 in state payments in 2026, the district said. The district reported the designation count and the payment total through its newsroom, apart from the luncheon.
