Sherman Police confirm active investigation, temporary closures along U.S. 75 east service road

Sherman Police confirmed an active investigation Friday, July 10, near the east service road of U.S. Highway 75 at Taylor Street, and the department warned drivers to expect a law enforcement presence and temporary road closures in that part of the city.

The department announced the investigation in a notice posted to its official Facebook page. The posting did not say what officers are investigating, and it did not identify anyone involved or mention an arrest. The department had released no further detail by the time this report was published.

The notice asked motorists to plan for officers working along the highway's east side near Taylor Street. It did not list specific closure points or give an estimate for when the affected roads would reopen, so drivers who normally use that service road may need another route while the scene stays closed.

Sherman Police issues formal statements through a Public Information Office and posts media releases and weekly public reports on its website, where residents can follow department activity between announcements.

The department's 2024 annual report counted one murder in Sherman that year and three in 2023. The same report shows the criminal investigations division, the unit that handles major cases, was assigned 673 cases during 2024 and cleared 642 of them, leaving 31 assigned cases open at year's end. Both figures come from the department's own published accounting of crime in the city.

Sherman Police also keeps a public list of major cases that remain open. That list includes unsolved murders from 1986, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2023. The oldest of those cases dates back four decades; the most recent is from three years ago.

The stretch of U.S. 75 involved in Friday's closures runs through a corridor the Texas Department of Transportation is rebuilding at Sherman and Denison. Frontage roads, the category that includes service roads like the one affected Friday, are among the elements covered by the state project, along with bridge and interchange construction. TxDOT says the work is meant to address safety, congestion, traffic operations, drainage and roadway deficiencies along the route. That construction program is separate from the police activity announced Friday.

Drivers passing through Sherman can watch the department's postings for word on when the east service road near Taylor Street will fully reopen. This report will be updated as Sherman Police releases more information.
