Sherman police say suspect still sought after North Heritage Parkway operation

SHERMAN — A police operation in the 300 block of North Heritage Parkway ended Wednesday, Aug. 12, without officers finding the person they were looking for, the Sherman Police Department said, and the search continues as part of an ongoing felony investigation. While the operation was underway, the department asked residents and motorists to stay out of the area.

Both statements appeared on the department's public Facebook page. The first post confirmed an active law-enforcement operation on the block and asked the public to avoid it. A later update to the same post said the operation had concluded, described the case as an ongoing felony investigation and reported that the suspect had not been located.

The department has released little beyond that. Its posts do not name the suspect, offer a physical description or identify the felony under investigation. They do not describe the property where the operation took place. They also do not say what type of call first drew officers to the block, so nothing in the public record confirms that the response began as a disturbance call. The posts likewise leave open whether the person sought was armed, whether anyone barricaded inside a building and which units the department deployed.

Sherman police do field a tactical unit built for situations of that kind. According to the department's website, its Special Response Team handles dangerous incidents, a list that includes barricaded suspects, service of high-risk warrants, hostage rescue and chemical-agent deployments, and its members can be called out at any hour of any day of the year. The page describes the unit in general terms; it does not show that the team took part in the Aug. 12 operation, and the department has not said whether it did.

The unit has crossed city lines before. In May 2022, when a standoff in Denison involved a firearm, Denison police said in a news release that they requested Sherman's Special Response Team and that the team responded while a Denison negotiator spoke with the suspect.

Other area agencies maintain similar teams. The Gainesville Police Department lists a Special Response Team of its own for high-risk incidents that call for special training, tactics and weapons, with members on call every day of the year, according to the city's website. The Grayson County Sheriff's Office lists a county Special Response Team that uses tactical measures in hostage situations or difficult arrests; the agency describes that squad as separate from its jail response team, its dive team and its boat patrol.

As of the department's most recent public update, Sherman police said officers were still working to locate the suspect. The department had released no further details.
