Sherman police search North Heritage Parkway block for felony assault suspect

Sherman Police told drivers and residents to keep clear of the 300 block of North Heritage Parkway while officers searched for a suspect connected to an ongoing felony assault investigation, according to a public alert from the department. The same post was later updated to say the operation ended at 3:34 p.m.

When the first notice went out, the department described the operation as active and still underway. Residents and motorists near the block should expect a large police presence and avoid the area, police said. The alert also instructed people not to approach officers or the scene while the operation was in progress.

Police attributed the response to the search for a suspect tied to the felony assault case. The alert does not name that person. It does not describe the alleged assault, and it does not say whether the search ended with anyone in custody. The department updated the original post in place rather than issuing a separate notice, so the warning and the closing time appear in the same item. The post carries one time stamp, the 3:34 p.m. conclusion, and no start time for the operation appears in it.

Texas law sits behind the instruction to keep back. Penal Code Section 38.15 makes it an offense to interrupt, disrupt, impede or otherwise interfere with a peace officer performing a lawful duty. The statute is general and separate from the Sherman case. It explains the warning departments routinely attach to notices about scenes officers are still working.

Sherman Police posted the alert on Facebook. Cooke County readers have other channels for warnings of this kind. Gainesville and Cooke County list CodeRED and the federal IPAWS system among their tools, and city material names public-safety emergencies, missing-person alerts, road closures and traffic advisories among the subjects that can prompt a notification. Grayson County, which includes Sherman, says it and its sixteen cities use CodeRED for geographically targeted emergency notifications by phone, text, email or TDD/TTY. Denison lists the same system for boil-water advisories, missing-child alerts and evacuation notices.

Heritage Parkway is the local name for FM 1417 in Sherman's records. The City Council approved improvements to West Lamberth Road from Heritage Parkway to Shady Oaks Lane under Resolution 5479, and Planning and Zoning minutes from 2017 record apartment, patio-home and retail-related actions along the corridor.

The 3:34 p.m. update ended the operation on North Heritage Parkway. It does not resolve the felony assault investigation that police said prompted the search, and the department released no further case information in the post.
