Sherman Police arrested a 71-year-old driver and sent three people to a local medical facility after a wrong-way crash on West U.S. Highway 82 on the evening of Aug. 9, 2026, the department said in a post on its official Facebook page. U.S. 82 is the east-west highway that carries Cooke County traffic out of Gainesville toward Sherman.

The department identified the driver as Randy Morrison and said he was booked on Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More, along with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Morrison and two people riding in the other vehicle were taken for treatment, according to the same post.
That post describes the wreck as Morrison's ninth DWI. The charge police listed does not fix a count by itself, because Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More reaches a third offense or any offense after it.

Texas Penal Code Section 49.09 is the provision that raises a driving while intoxicated case to a felony level once the state proves earlier intoxication-related convictions. Section 22.02 of the same code defines aggravated assault and covers an assault in which a deadly weapon is used or exhibited. That section is the statutory setting for the two extra counts named by Sherman Police.
Charges filed at booking are accusations, not findings of guilt. A count of prior offenses would have to be proven in court before it changed the level of a conviction.
The department's crash-report FAQ says Sherman Police investigate wrecks inside the city that involve an injury or an intoxicated driver. The official account of the Aug. 9 crash describes both.
