Residents had invitations to meet first responders at National Night Out gatherings scheduled across Texoma for Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026. Sherman ISD’s calendar and Denison’s city announcement placed events that evening, offering neighbors an informal setting to get acquainted with the people serving their communities.
For its seventh annual event, Denison advertised K-9 demonstrations and activities, with food and local vendors also on the program. The city identified Denison Police and Denison Fire Rescue as hosts. Those advance notices establish what was planned; they do not confirm that the gatherings took place.
Denison Police’s explanation of National Night Out puts personal contact at the center of the event. Food and games give residents and officers a setting for informal conversation, the department says, with greater trust and stronger police-community relationships as the intended results.
The Sherman calendar gave the location as 405 N. Rusk Street and the hours as 6–8 p.m. Denison’s notice set aside 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Forest Park.
Cooke County residents had a local invitation that same evening: Gainesville scheduled a free Farmers Market gathering from 6–8 p.m. Its calendar listing advertised bounce houses, plus crafts and games, and food at no charge while supplies lasted. The city’s announcement listed Gainesville police and firefighters among the expected participants. Also named were the Cooke County Sheriff’s Office, Cooke County EMS, Gainesville ISD Police and CareFlite.
Denison’s plans followed what its Police Department described as a record turnout at Forest Park last year. The department reported that attendance tripled compared with the previous year.

Sherman’s 2024 police annual report identifies that year’s gathering as the city’s first nationally registered National Night Out and records hundreds of attendees. Local recognition came earlier: City Council minutes document a proclamation for the October observance in 2010.
The autumn date reflects the schedule followed in Texas. According to the National Association of Town Watch, the usual observance falls on August’s first Tuesday, while Texas and selected other areas use October’s first Tuesday. A Sherman council agenda from 2010 explained that heat prompted many Texas cities to choose October.
National Night Out is one of the ways Denison Police offers residents contact with officers throughout the year. Its community engagement page also lists a Citizens Police Academy and safety courses, along with Coffee with a Cop and Donut Delight.
