TxDOT posts US 82 closures touching July 7 and July 10

The Texas Department of Transportation’s Paris District posted two overnight US 82 closures at US 75 in Sherman for the week after Independence Day weekend, with work scheduled from 7 p.m. July 6 to 5 a.m. July 7 and again from 7 p.m. July 9 to 5 a.m. July 10. For Gainesville and Cooke County readers, the public records tie those closures to the Sherman-Denison US 75/US 82 project, while TxDOT lists the Gainesville-area US 82 Relief Route as a separate Cooke County feasibility study.

TxDOT Paris said the July 6-7 closure was for paving on the US 75 bridge deck over US 82. The agency’s notice identified overnight closures of the eastbound and westbound US 82 main lanes at US 75, along with the US 82 frontage roads. The detour listed eastbound traffic at Exit 642 and westbound traffic at Exit 642B.

A separate TxDOT Paris notice listed another overnight closure at the same interchange from July 9 into July 10. That notice again put eastbound traffic on the Exit 642 detour and westbound traffic on the Exit 642B detour, according to TxDOT Paris.

The notices reviewed for this report show two overnight closure periods. They do not show one continuous US 82 closure from July 7 through July 10.

The timing placed the work immediately after the Independence Day weekend. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s 2026 federal holiday calendar lists Friday, July 3, as the observed holiday for Independence Day, with the standard federal rule applying when the legal holiday falls on a Saturday.

The Sherman-Denison work is part of TxDOT’s long-running US 75 project in Grayson County. On its project page, TxDOT says the work is meant to address safety, congestion, traffic operations, drainage and roadway deficiencies on US 75 and US 82 in Sherman and Denison.

TxDOT’s description says the broader US 75 plan includes adding main lanes, continuous frontage roads and U-turns. The same page says the US 75 and US 82 interchange improvements include added frontage-road lanes and U-turns, plus intersection work at North Travis Street and Loy Lake Road.

The corridor has been in public planning for years, according to TxDOT. The agency’s US 75 project page says TxDOT held a public meeting on the proposed Sherman improvements on March 22, 2018, at the Sherman Municipal Ballroom.

A Texas Transportation Commission contract record from the Oct. 31, 2024, state letting lists a Grayson County US 75 highway-improvement item in the Paris District with a low bid of $145,430,024.26. The record identifies the limits as US 82 to SH 91, also called Texoma Parkway, and lists the work type as widening the road and adding lanes.

TxDOT records also identify a separate Cooke County US 82 Relief Route feasibility study around Gainesville. The Cooke County study describes a proposed four-lane east-west loop north of Gainesville, connecting near Lindsay on the west and near Oak Ridge on the east. TxDOT lists that study separately from the Grayson County US 75/US 82 interchange project.
