Unbeaten Collinsville opens district play at Lindsay, the team that ended its 2025 season

The Pirates bring a 5-0 record into Friday's opener in a new six-team district that also includes Era.

Collinsville takes an unbeaten record to Lindsay on Friday, Oct. 9, to open district play against the team that knocked the Pirates out of the 2025 playoffs. Lindsay ISD's event calendar has varsity kickoff set for 7 p.m.

MaxPreps lists Collinsville at 5-0, with wins over Tioga, Cooper, Bells, Muenster and Alvord. According to UIL archives, Muenster won the 2A Division II state title in both 2024 and 2025.

The two teams played twice last fall, and the second game reversed the first. MaxPreps shows Collinsville winning at Lindsay by 22 points in October. Six weeks later the teams met again in the playoffs. Lindsay won that game by six, ending a Collinsville season that finished at 10-3.

Friday's game is the first district contest for both schools under UIL's 2026-28 alignment. That alignment puts Collinsville and Lindsay in Conference 2A Division II, Region III, District 9. Celeste, Cumby, Era and Quinlan Boles fill out the six-team district.

Winning the district is not required for a run at the state title. UIL sends the top four teams from each 2A Division II district to the playoffs, so four of the six District 9 schools will advance.

In an August preseason interview with KXII, Collinsville head coach Garrett Patterson said he wants the program to get past the third and fourth rounds of the playoffs and win a state championship. Collinsville player Caysen Schafer named both a district championship and a state championship as goals in the same interview.

Lindsay has had its own success. The Lindsay ISD football page lists district championships in 2019, 2020 and 2021, plus playoff trips in 2023 and 2024.

The district map changed after last season. Under the 2024-26 alignment, Collinsville and Lindsay played in Region II, District 8 with Chico, Era, Muenster and Santo. Of those four, only Era moved with them. UIL now places Muenster in 2A Division I, District 6. UIL's state record for Muenster's 2025 team shows it beat Collinsville and Lindsay in the regular season, then beat Lindsay again in the playoffs.

The fourth playoff spot dates to October 2014. That month, UIL's Legislative Council voted to raise the number of district qualifiers from three to four in all Conference 2A varsity team sports. UIL counts about 100 schools in 2A Division II statewide for the 2026-28 cycle.

Districts must certify their playoff teams by Nov. 7. First-round games are set for Nov. 12-14, and UIL has scheduled the state championship games for Dec. 16-19.
