US 82 to close overnight in both directions at US 75 interchange in Sherman

US 82 will close in both directions at the US 75 interchange in Sherman overnight Monday, the Texas Department of Transportation announced, with the eastbound and westbound main lanes and the frontage roads all shut down from 7 p.m. July 6 until 5 a.m. July 7. Traffic during the ten-hour closure will be routed onto detours at exits 642 and 642B, the US 82 exits that serve the US 75 interchange.

The notice came from TxDOT's Paris District through its official TxDOT Paris account. According to the agency, the closure takes in the access roads along with the main lanes, so frontage-road traffic stops for the night in addition to through traffic on the highway itself.

The overnight work is one piece of TxDOT's US 75/US 82 project in the Sherman-Denison area. On its project page, the agency says the reconstruction is meant to improve safety, ease congestion and correct problems with traffic operations, drainage and the condition of the roadway. Plans for the spot where the two highways meet call for added frontage-road lanes and new U-turns, and the project also includes work at North Travis Street and Loy Lake Road. In the agency's project materials, Monday night's closure fits into that larger interchange rebuild rather than standing alone as a one-off repair.

Regional planning records explain why the corridor drew a reconstruction project in the first place. The Grayson County Metropolitan Planning Organization's adopted 2023-2026 Transportation Improvement Program counts ten fatal crashes on US 75 between North Loy Lake Road and US 82 in the five years before the plan was adopted. The same document reports that the segment carries more daily traffic, including more commercial vehicles, than Interstate 35 does in Cooke County. Those figures form part of the safety and freight case the planning organization lays out for rebuilding the highway.

TxDOT has stopped traffic at this crossing before. In August 2023, the agency closed the US 75/US 82 frontage-road intersection to all through traffic during a weekend operation and sent drivers to signed detours, according to a news release the Paris District issued at the time. That earlier closure spanned a weekend. The one announced for Monday is scheduled for a single night.

TxDOT says the closure runs from 7 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, with the main lanes and frontage roads set to reopen when the overnight window ends.
