Denison approves Waterloo Pool demolition after safety inspections

The city plans to cover the estimated $250,000 demolition cost with insurance proceeds.

Denison City Council approved tearing down Waterloo Pool on Oct. 5. Mayor Robert Crawley told KXII that demolition would include the entire facility.

Denison officials cited worsening structural conditions and safety risks. Contractors who examined repair options recommended demolition, according to the city, which had announced an indefinite closure Sept. 15.

City staff will assemble a task force to identify residents’ swimming needs and evaluate locations, programs and operating requirements for a future facility. Crawley told KXII that the city has not decided how to use the Waterloo site.

Austin College will provide Waterloo patrons two hours of free indoor swimming each weekday, from 9 to 11 a.m., KXII reported. Access depends on the college securing additional lifeguards; the city will announce a starting date once staffing is arranged.
