We've used Walmart delivery for a year and a half. The part nobody told us about is for aging parents.

We've had a Walmart+ membership for a little over a year and a half now, and it has changed how our household runs more than any other subscription we pay for. Nobody asked us to write this and nobody is paying us for it. We're writing it because we keep explaining the same features to neighbors one at a time, and the part that matters most, the part about looking after an aging parent from a phone, is the part almost nobody knows exists.

Start with the store itself. The Supercenter at 1800 Lawrence St. is the main grocery and the main pharmacy for a good share of Cooke County, and for a year and a half most of what we eat has come from it without us walking in. Groceries show up at the door, usually within the window we picked. That alone was worth it to us. What we did not expect was how much of the rest of running a home could ride along.

The part for caregivers

Walmart began same-day prescription delivery in six states in October 2024, had it in 49 states by the end of January 2025, and in September 2025 added insulin and other refrigerated and mixed medications. The company says it can now deliver more than nine of every ten prescriptions it fills, and that it has done more than four million pharmacy deliveries. Controlled substances are excluded. For members the delivery is free with no minimum; everyone else pays a per-order fee.

The feature that turns that into caregiving is called Manage Family Prescriptions. Walmart's help page says you can add adults, minors and pets to one pharmacy account and handle their prescriptions from it. For another adult, your mother, say, she has to approve a pending request from inside her own Walmart pharmacy account before you can see or manage anything. That consent step is the right design, and it's quick. Once she's linked, you can order her refills, see whether an order has been filled, picked up or delivered, transfer a prescription, and manage her insurance, all next to your own. You link her by scanning one of her prescription labels, by a phone-number lookup she confirms with a one-time code, or by entering her insurance and personal details.

Her medicine does not have to come to your porch. The help page says a linked relative's prescription can be delivered to that relative's own address as long as a Walmart pharmacy delivers there. The person placing the order needs their own membership for the delivery to be free.

Groceries and household goods for her work the same way, through tools Walmart has had for years. At checkout you can send an order to any address, and the gifting flow lets you enter a recipient's address and email. An address on an order already placed can be changed once. There's no special caregiver mode. It's the ordinary cart, pointed at someone else's house.

Where the fine print stops you

Two things surprised us, and we'd rather you hear them from us than at checkout.

The membership can be shared, but only with one adult who lives full-time at the same address as you. Each person keeps their own account, the invitation expires in 14 days, and the shared member can use one authorized card while seeing only its last four digits. A mother in Muenster and a daughter in Gainesville can't share one membership. Either both hold one, or the daughter orders on her account and ships to her mother.

Walmart also publishes no delivery map. The Gainesville store page lists grocery pickup and delivery with fees noted for delivery, and the only way to find out whether a house in Era or Valley View is inside the zone is to type the address into the app. We could not find any Walmart source that says how far outside town the drivers go. The company told investors in April 2025 that fast delivery had reached small rural towns as well as big metros, and said in February 2025 that same-day delivery covered 93 percent of American households, with a target of 95 percent by the end of that year. Your address is the only test that counts.

What it costs, and what else you get

The membership is $98 a year or $12.95 a month. Walmart+ Assist, launched in July 2023, is half price at $49 a year for anyone on SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, WIC and a list of other programs, with eligibility checked by a third-party service. Under Assist, free grocery delivery needs a $35 order, and the fee itself can't be paid with SNAP benefits.

The side benefits are the reason we stopped doing the math. According to Walmart's own rundown of member perks, the membership also carries free shipping on eligible online orders with no minimum, free pharmacy delivery, a fuel discount at participating stations, a streaming subscription with a choice of Peacock or Paramount+, Scan & Go in the store so you can skip the register, early access to select deals, free online pet care, a Burger King discount, and cash back on hotels and car rentals booked through Walmart+ Travel. In the store there are three more we didn't know about until we read the list: 25 free 4x6 photo prints a month at the Photo Center, one fee-free Money Center transaction every three months (check cashing, money orders, a money transfer, a bill payment), and at the Auto Care Center a free repair of a qualifying flat tire plus a free road-hazard warranty when you buy tires with the value installation package. The streaming pick and the fuel discount alone have covered most of our yearly fee.

Why we think this matters here

The Census Bureau's latest estimate puts 19.5 percent of Cooke County's 44,258 residents at 65 or older, against roughly 14 percent statewide and 17.7 percent nationally. The 2025 Caregiving in the U.S. report from AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving counted 63 million Americans, nearly one adult in four, caring for an adult or a child with a serious condition, up 20 million since 2015. Nearly one caregiver in four gives 40 hours a week or more, and only 11 percent said they'd had training for basic care tasks. A lot of those people live on our roads.

Kevin Host, Walmart's senior vice president of pharmacy, said in the September 2025 announcement that adding refrigerated prescriptions came from "listening to our customers." We can't speak for the company. We can say that a year and a half in, we would pay for the membership for the pharmacy feature alone, and that if you're driving to Lawrence Street every week for someone else's prescriptions, it's worth ten minutes to set up the family account and see if the delivery reaches their door.
